No matter what happens to us along life's highway, I am grateful that God has given me the extended opportunity to do something positive with my own experiences.
I was 51 at the time I was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 1996. I began to wake up during the night with a slight sting in my left breast. I told my husband Arides about it. I had a routine mammogram prior to the stinging in my left breast, however nothing abnormal showed except for fibroid cysts.
Before I went to see my gynecologist, I had a feeling that I had breast cancer. It was a feeling that no matter how much I tried to forget, the feeling would not go away. I began to read a few pamphlets on breast cancer before confirmed by the physicians. I had already decided that I was going to beat this if it was breast cancer.
Positive thinking gives positive results!!!
After two weeks I decided to call my gynecologist for a checkup. She sent me to have another mammogram. The tumor was found to be malignant, and it had not spread to my lymph node which made me very happy! I was given six months of chemotherapy and five weeks of radiation.
Having no effects from chemo and radiation, and no hair lost, I received my BS degree from Bloomfield College in New Jersey the same year that I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
I am an example of how early detection can help save a life from breast cancer.
I thank God for helping me to keep a positive attitude.
A special thanks to my family and to Clarice who help me choose the right treatment.
Today, I am a volunteer support person for Cancer Hope Networks in Chester, NJ.
It's great to celebrate 13 years of being CANCER FREE as of March 2009.
